Here we go again

This is my second attempt at running a blog. As before, I start with high hopes and no idea at all whether Face of Chaos will wither on the vine.

It has a few things going for it. After twelve years in the sff.net community, I’ve relocated my entire website to a host with a fuller “behind the scenes” toolbox. Back in 1995, during the “brave new dawn” of the World Wide Web, SFF.net invited any science-fiction or fantasy author who dared to take the plunge, to sign up and start coding. A lot of us did, and we couldn’t have asked for a better (or more knowledgeable…and sleepless) set of gurus to guide us.

But about a year ago my dad asked me if I could put together a website for Peekskill High School–the Peekskill, NY high school he graduated from in 1940 (and which I attended for a few months myself…but that’s another story). Dad and another PHS alum had put together an ad hoc site that sprawled across every web farm in the known universe and was a complete bear to maintain. Illness had forced his partner to step back and, on reflection, Dad wanted to take his hobby to the next level.

I said “free web-farms won’t cut it, Dad; you’re going to have to get your own domain.” He agreed and together we created the Peekskill High Alumni website (just in case you might be wondering why my site has been just a little neglected over the last twelve months!).  Anyway, I had to find a host for the site and settled on Bluehost.

Opening up the Bluehost admin-control panel for the first time was a little like being turned in the ultimate candy store. They have so many toys just begging to be played with!  They also gave us more gigabytes of storage than we could hope to fill.

It’s a measure of how broad the PHS-site horizons are at Bluehost that it took up until January to realize that I could bootstrap my own site into the PHS site’s host space.  But the move has happened and the dust is starting to settle.  They gave me not one, but four different blogging options. I’ve chosen WordPress, not because I know anything about it, or even because someone recommended it, but because, early on, I spotted a graphic theme I sort of liked.  It’s called Leia (as in Princess Leia, I think…maybe…the template’s in Portuguese; it’s hard to tell.)

Anyway, it fits my mood right now.
